This year’s Day in the City comp was by far the best. Snickers put up £4000 for the combined team of skaters who filmed and edited a skate part in one week, based on their skate around the City of London. The great thing with this comp is that it pushes skaters and filmers to get inventive and perform under the pressure of a deadline. This year’s entries had everything from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ spoofs to tie-dye colour editing techniques, plus a really good level of skating.
On the one hand you had the comedic offerings such as ‘Skate Mum’ by Gendle and Verity, whilst on the other you had no nonsense street skating from talent such as Jerome Campbell, Tom Watts, or Ross Mc Gouran. The great thing with all the entries though, was the way in which they actually made you want to get up and go skate. Each team took time to explore the City and try and find new things to skate, even if their travels took them past a few recognisable landmarks.
The show reel which took the cash was the ‘Skate Mum’ skit filmed by Adam Gendle and Johno Verity, and I can see why; Jennifer Baxter plays the part of an upbeat mother who is willing to and shred the City with her son, Tom Knox. A very smart and funny montage has us believing this wacky mother can actually leap down rails and gaps (even though it’s actually Brendan Ryall dressed up in a skirt and wig!). Even if the ‘Skate Mum’ crew won the money, it didn’t really matter because everyone’s participation was worthy of reward.
Once you have watched the main feature of Snicker’s Day in the City, you have a few bonus chapters to sit through including a sweet photo montage of pictures taken throughout the event, and another event that also calls for skaters to take their shred-sleds to the streets- The Emerica Wild in the Streets unorthodox demonstration in Dublin. Both this event and DITC show the public just how creative and fun riding a skateboard can be. Let’s hope next years skating is even better and that another city gets to experience some real street skating! |
